"To make this work run the 32-bit version of sidebar.exe." or “My gadget won’t refresh”

Messenger Gadget screenshot - "To make this work run the 32-bit version of sidebar.exe"

If you see this message it means that you have a 64-bit machine. Good for you! Well, mostly. A 64-bit machine is generally a good thing (I have one), but in the case of this gadget it means that your contact and status information will not auto-refresh.  The good news is that there is a way to work around this. Use the 32-bit version of sidebar.exe and everything should work.

How do I run the 32-bit sidebar.exe?

Part 1. Close the 64-bit version:

1. Press the keys “Ctrl + Shift + Esc” at the same time to launch the “Windows Task Manager”

2. Select the “Processes” tab

3. Select “sidebar.exe” from the list

4. Press the “End Process” button

5. Close the task manager

Part 2. Launch the 32-bit version:

1. Press and hold the “Windows Key” (the one with the windows logo) and then press the letter “r” to launch the “Run” window

2. Type “%systemdrive%\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe” (without the quote marks) into the text box

3. Press the “OK” button

Or you could make your program work with the modern technology of five years ago. That might also be an option. People like you are the reason we're not using 512-bit machines yet.

  5. @All those that blame for not having a 512-bit machine :p - As a person that have been using 64-bit machines for many years now I would love not have to go through this process and for all apps to support 64-bit processors. Unfortunately the code that triggers the events (the one that does not work in 64-bit) is out of my control. Because of this, the options are 1) have a gadget that runs on 64-bit process, but won't update 2) have this error message that blocks the gadget from running on 64-bit process and instructions on how to make it work. Since this is something done only one time I chose #2.

I hope this helps give a little more insight on what is going on.

Awesome high quality gadget! But considering how many 64bit systems there are out there, it would be nice to have a version that supports it. Beggers can't be choosers since we're not paying for the gadget.

    @Eric:

Have you considered the other gadgets that people may be running that will not run on the 32-bit version of sidebar.exe?

    Fix your app!

  10. It would be nice if people actually READ what the developer said.

In this perticular instance, MSN MESSENGER, only runs in 32bit mode, which means all the code that it is written to respond too, is ONLY available in 32bit mode. So the developer is FORCED to use 32 for the time being.

Blame Microsoft again, not the outside developer.

<_< Well uhh. Seriously nice app, Eric. +5 cool points to you. To all the people that can't simply enjoy a free MSN app, go make one yourselves for 64bit. :)

This is stupid why don't you either make a 64bit version of it or fix the current version of the app.

You ppl love to complain a lot! It's a nice app, if you can't use it, thats your problem; If it doesn't work with your other gadgets, again it's your problem. If you don't like it, don't use it; nobody's forcing you. Give credit to the person that made it and quit bitching.

Thank you for the gadget ^.^

if you dont want to restart the sidebar all the time when you restart your computer

make a .bat file with the following code in it:

    TASKKILL /f /IM sidebar.exe
    CD %systemdrive%\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\
    START sidebar.exe

en put it in your "startup" directory :) it will shutdown de 64x version and start the 32x bit version auto.

  26. Don't bother with other methods; try this one:

    GIVE UP!

All other methods only reset the x64 sidebar, since the x86 is only a launcher for x64.

cuando todos tengamos la plata para un equipo que saque provecho al máximo 64bit, cuando las empresas de sistemas operativos dejen de crear sistemas operativos de 32bit, se habrán dado cuenta, que el mundo les dejo de comprar porque se actualizo...

My Bad!!! Should read... An M$ 64-bit OS, An M$ IM service... Hmmm.... Shouldn't it be M$ responcibility to A: provide a 64-bit gadget or B: Provide develepers @ all levels the tools for us to be able to do it ourselves? My opinion, They NEED to bridge there own gaps first. If they can't figure out how to do it with their own teccnologies (Security aside :-0)What are we left with? Random thoughts???

To Eric and others that try to help those of us that are not as computer proficient, Thank You. To those that love to complain; when you write something that works better you can inject your assistance. If someone is trying to do you a favor since when do you bite the hand that feeds you? Be appreciative that someone wants to help, there is very little of that left these days.
